Record Study Measurements

The "Record Study Measurements" page is where a Gage R&R study's readings are entered. It opens automatically when a study is created, and any study in "In Progress" status opens here from the studies list. Once every planned measurement has been recorded, saving calculates the results and moves the study to "Complete".
Page Header
The header names the study number and its type — "Variable Gage R&R" or "Attribute Gage R&R" — alongside the following:
Tool
The tool type and serial number recorded on the study.
Spec
The feature specification captured when the study was created. Shown only when the feature carries one.
Plan
The study plan, as operators × parts × trials, with an Edit plan link beside it.
Entered
Measurements recorded so far, against the total planned.
Nested
Shown only on a nested (destructive) study, to note that each operator measures its own parts.
Blind
Shown only on a blind study, to note that parts are shuffled per trial and that saved trials are hidden and locked.
Page Actions
Save measurements
Saves everything typed since the last save. The button is disabled when there is nothing to save. Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on a Mac) does the same thing.
Finish & calculate
The same button, relabelled once every planned measurement has been recorded and saved. Clicking it calculates the results, sets the study to "Complete" and opens the Gage R&R Results page.
Cancel Study
Cancels the study. A prompt asks for a reason, which is recorded against the Cancelled event on the study's Audit Trail. A cancelled study cannot be resumed.

Returns to the MSA Studies list.
The Measurement Grid
The grid has one row per appraiser and trial, grouped by appraiser, and one column per sample part. Variable studies take a numeric reading in each cell; attribute studies take a pass or fail judgment.
Column headings
On an ordinary study the columns are the parts themselves, labelled P1 onward. On a blind study, where the presentation order is shuffled, the columns become positions — #1, #2 and so on — because the part behind a position differs for each appraiser and trial. The cell you are typing into then carries its own part label, and only the row being worked on shows those labels.
Trial order
Trials are entered in sequence. Trial 2 does not open until every part in trial 1 has a reading, and so on. On a blind study those readings must also have been saved, not merely typed.
Keyboard entry
Arrow keys move between cells. Tab and Enter continue onto the neighbouring row the way a spreadsheet does, skipping any cell that cannot take input. Entry stops at a trial that is not yet open rather than jumping ahead to another appraiser.
Entered precision
Readings are stored with the number of decimal places you type, and that precision is preserved through the calculation and on the results page.
Which cells you can fill
By default you can only enter readings on your own appraiser rows. Recording on behalf of another appraiser requires the Calibrator, Setup Administrator or Super Administrator role; without it, other appraisers' rows are read-only.
On a blind study, a trial that has been fully saved is hidden and locked, because revising it would mean editing values the appraiser is not permitted to see. A partly saved trial stays open and visible so a typo can be corrected before the trial completes.
Editing the Study Plan
The Edit plan link opens a dialog for changing the operator, part and trial counts and the appraiser assignments, within the same limits the study was created under — 2 to 5 operators, 2 to 100 parts, 2 to 5 trials.
Save your measurements before editing the plan; the dialog will not open while readings are unsaved. Changes that would orphan recorded measurements — removing an appraiser who has readings, or reducing a count below the cells already entered — are rejected.
Common Issues & Quick Solutions
"1 recorded measurement(s) cannot be removed. The saved reading has been restored — type over it to correct it."
A saved reading was cleared. Measurements can be corrected but not deleted, so the saved value is put back. Type the correct value over it and save again.
"2 cell(s) contain non-numeric values."
A cell on a variable study holds something that is not a number. Nothing is saved until every entry is numeric.
"Save your measurements before editing the plan."
The Edit plan dialog reloads the study, which would discard anything typed but not saved. Save first, then edit the plan.
"Assign an operator to every appraiser slot."
An appraiser slot in the Edit plan dialog is empty. Every planned operator needs an assignment before the plan can be saved.
Access
Recording measurements requires the Operator, Calibrator, Setup Administrator or Super Administrator role. Recording on behalf of other appraisers, editing the plan and cancelling the study each require the Calibrator, Setup Administrator or Super Administrator role.
